The pound will be difficult to predict, particularly in the first half of the year but our analysts have put together a table looking at the impact on the pound based on a variety of scenarios.
The dollar is set for a tougher 2019 due to the compensatory actions by the Federal Reserve and increasing political risk, while the euro faces worrying headwinds, driven as much by what goes on in the US and UK, as within the EU itself.
Uncertainty over trade and slowing economic growth are likely to have an impact across the board. The Chinese economy is facing several challenges and the US-China trade war is likely to put pressure on emerging market currencies. It’s likely that the big winner for 2019 could be the yen, while sterling also has the potential to put in a much stronger performance than last year.
