A recent survey of over 2,000 holidaymakers has revealed that many Brits are ‘last-minute-Larry’s’, leaving it until the eleventh-hour to buy holiday cash when travelling abroad.
The YouGov survey, commissioned by travel money specialists, Moneycorp, revealed that 36 per cent of Brits did not think about purchasing travel money until a week or less before their last holiday – meaning that over a third of us could be missing out on some of the best foreign exchange rates.
Here Moneycorp give expert insight on how to make the most of foreign exchange services and the benefits of not leaving things until the last minute. Vanessa Schotes, head of marketing for travel money at Moneycorp, explains:
“Despite our best intentions, when it comes to holiday planning most of us are guilty of leaving things until the last minute. What many of us don’t realise is that sorting your holiday money is one of the easiest things to tick off your list.
“As we gear up to one of our busiest weekends of the year, our advice to Brits holidaying abroad this summer is don’t miss out on the travel money products that can get you more bang-for-your-buck.
“For time-strapped Brits, our reserve and collection service is a good option. This enables you to lock in a currency exchange rate up to four weeks before travelling and benefit from the best rate on the day of purchase or the day of currency collection. The travel money can be purchased online or over the phone – taking just a few moments – and picked up at any one of our airport bureaux en route to your holiday.
“For those typically at home when the postman calls, we would recommend looking at the online options available. It takes just a few minutes to buy currency online and there are some great rates to be had. Online rates tend to be the most competitive and the currency is delivered straight to your door.
“For the more adventurous jet-setters out there, an explorer card should be the first thing on the holiday checklist. This is another way to secure the best exchange rates before travelling, with the added bonus of enabling users to load up to 14 currencies to one card.
“It really does pay off to order your currency a good few weeks before you go on holiday – it doesn’t take much time and means you can enjoy a good local meal with the money you save!”
