The highlight of the dollar's week was undoubtedly Monday night's debate between the two US presidential hopefuls. The clearest picture of how investors see the situation was provided by the Mexican peso. Ahead of the debate, with Mr Trump leading in the polls, the peso fell sharply as investors imagined big beautiful walls and the scrapping of trade deals. Afterwards, with Mrs Clinton ahead, it staged almost as sharp a recovery.
If the interest rate debate has not moved far ahead at least it is becoming more vocal, with a growing number of bankers and analysts calling for the Federal Reserve to get a grip and deliver the rate increase that everyone knows is coming. Their calls did little for the dollar though. It put in an average performance, losing a fifth of a cent to the euro and taking three quarters of a cent off the Brexit-bound pound.
