Take some inspirations from these classics this Valentine's Day

With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s time to start thinking about some romantic city breaks to jet off to. Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, serving as the perfect excuse to book yourself a long weekend off and have that romantic getaway you’ve always wanted! We’ve done the hard work for you and found some Valentine’s Day travel destinations based on romantic movies set in Europe. If these films don’t sell it to you, we don’t know what will!

Italy (Rome):

‘To Rome with Love’ and ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ are two romantic films that heavily focus on Rome’s romantic nature. Italy is the ideal destination for couples, yet Rome itself is thought to be the Italian city of romance.

Things to do in Rome:
  • Make a wish in the Trevi Fountain

  • Attend a ballet or opera at Teatro dell'Opera

  • Rent a Vespa

  • Have dinner at the romantic dining spot: Try the Piazza Navona, it is one of the most beautiful and largest squares in Rome with grand fountains and lots of choice of eateries.

  • Visit the Sistine Chapel

  • Go to the open-air cinema

France (Paris):

‘Sex and the City’, ‘Amelie’ and ‘Midnight in Paris’ all depict Paris in its true form, as the city of love. Paris is heavily romanticised and French is often said to be the language of love. With this European city being the global centre for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture, it’s hard not to understand its beauty and why it is considered the city for lovers.

Things to do in Paris:
  • Go up the Eiffel Tower

  • Love Lock Bridge

  • Take a boat tour through the canals

  • Musée de Montmartre

  • Go the traditional Parisian cafés. Why not try Les Deux Magots at 6 Place Saint-Germain des Prés.

  • Louvre museum

‘Before Midnight’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ are two films set in idyllic Greece. Watch their romantic stories and paths unfold in the beautiful surroundings. Although the Greek islands are famous for romantic settings, it might be best to save this romantic getaway for the warmer months to really soak up their picturesque beaches and romantic sunsets.

Things to do in Greece:
  • Take a boat trip to one of the islands. Santorini is a very popular island and a beautiful romantic getaway destination for couples.

  • Sunbathe

  • Explore the little towns and narrow streets

  • Go to a spa

  • Take a bicycle ride and explore further

If you’d like your Valentine’s Day break to coincide with a ski holiday then Austria is the destination for you! Chalet Girl is a young love story about a Chalet Host who falls in love in the Austrian Alps. An Austrian ski resort is a magical setting for a romantic travel destination, think mulled wine, hot chocolate, hot tubs, snow and cosy log fires.

Things to do in the Austrian Alps (besides skiing):
  • Drinks in a slopeside bar, we would recommend heading to The Mooserwirt for some fun Austrian après

  • Head to a relaxing spa

  • Eat at a Michelin star restaurant

  • Enjoy alfresco hot tubs after a long day on the slopes

Spain (Barcelona):

Visit Spain’s beautiful cities, and gain inspiration from the iconic Oscar-nominated ‘Vicky Christina Barcelona’. This love story depicts two friends who fall in love with Barcelona and the same man. Barcelona is an incredibly romantic city with great food wine and beautiful architecture and sights. Although it may be a colder month to visit, the winter weather attracts fewer tourists and you can explore the incredible city like a local.

Things to do in Barcelona:
  • Share a jug of sangria up at a rooftop bar, we recommend The Pulitzer Terrace at Hotel Pulitzer

  • Discover Park Guell

  • Eat Tapas and Paella

  • Watch the sunset

  • Rent bikes and explore the city

  • Visit La Sagrada Familia

The Netherlands:

The Netherlands is extremely picturesque and is known for its flat landscape of canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes. With such great cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague it would be a shame not to consider The Netherlands for your Valentine’s Day romantic city break. ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ was set in the Netherlands and explores how a maid is an artist’s love interest.

Things to do in Amsterdam:
  • Enjoy a Show at Vondelpark's Open Air Theatre

  • Explore the picturesque streets of the Jordaan

  • Cycle along the canals. We would also recommend doing a canal boat tour as one of the best ways to explore the city.

  • Take a walk through Vondelpark

Things to do in Rotterdam:

  • Erasmus Bridge

  • Explore Kunsthal Rotterdam

  • Go to Old Harbour

  • Walk around Het Park
