For International Surfing Day on Saturday 16th June, we take a look at some European surfing hot-spots where surfers of all abilities can catch a tube.

Challenging and invigorating surf in South West France

Hossegor in South West France may be one of the surfing world’s best kept secrets, although that may be because the pounding beach breaks demand more experienced surfers than some of the tourist spots. Those willing and able to take on the challenge will be rewarded with some of the warmest sea temperatures in the Atlantic as well as what are considered some of the best waves in the world.

Big waves on Madeira Island

Portuguese Madeira Island is also renowned for big wave surfing. There are, however, still some gentler breaks for those just starting out and the island also offers a range of other outdoor activities. Madeira Island surfing has a lot to offer thrill-seekers looking for an active holiday on beautiful beaches, whether or not they visit for the surf.

Spain offers beginners and experienced surfers great breaks in beautiful settings

San Vicente de la Barquera on the Spanish coast of Cantabria offers great conditions amongst the breath-taking surroundings of the Oyambre natural park. Along the main beach, Merón, you can find both great conditions for learning and more difficult peaks for more advanced surfers. The region also boasts some excellent seafood restaurants and is famous for its ham, wine and cheeses if you’re looking for places to refuel in the evening.

A bracing break for surfers in Ireland

Even closer to home, the stretch of surf along the Irish coast by Bundoran in County Donegal picks up swells from almost every direction and includes the long, hollow barrels of The Peak as well as the more beginner-friendly waves at Rossnowlagh Beach. Of course, you may not have guaranteed sunshine, but the variety of breaks makes it an ideal place to develop your surfing skills. The chances are that if you’re searching for surfing holidays, you’re not looking for a place to lie on a sun-lounger. The hearty Irish welcome – and even heartier Irish breakfasts – may be more welcome than tropical sunshine in the circumstances.
