On European Neighbours Day, we take a look at some reasons to move to the continent

May 25th is European Neighbours Day. It’s a day for people to spend some time connecting with their neighbours and aims to foster more co-operation and understanding across the continent.

While some Brits may be feeling disillusioned with the outcome of the Brexit vote, if you still feel that you’re European at heart, it is still possible to move to the continent and start a new life there. Technology such as Skype and the ubiquitous nature of wifi mean that it is easy to keep in touch with friends and relatives in the UK, and the globalised economy means that you don’t even have to say goodbye to your favourite brand of tea.

Here are just a few of the reasons Brits are considering packing up and moving overseas.

Affordable property

Many in the UK are struggling to get onto the housing ladder or to find themselves in a position to achieve the home of their dreams in terms of space or style. In contrast, a property investment overseas is not only within reach, it can come with additional lifestyle benefits.

Investing in a career

Many professionals are looking beyond the UK to develop their career as the jobs market starts to stagnate. Spain is a popular destination, with Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia topping the list of relocations due to the range and scope of career opportunities available.

Health

A survey from health insurer AXA PPP International showed that 61% of ex-pats felt that their health improved when they moved abroad, and 64% felt that their mental health improved.

Climate

Many people from Britain move to warmer or more temperate climates, which is perhaps part of the reason many report improvements in their physical and mental health. The convenience and luxury of year-round sun is a compelling reason for many to move abroad.

Culture and Cuisine

Any cuisine is likely to be much healthier than the carbohydrate-rich British diet. Coupled with a slower and more respectful culture towards many aspects of life from food to family all over the world, the change of pace and diet could drastically improve your outlook.

Adventure

There are many practical benefits to moving abroad, but perhaps the most compelling reason is to find a way to fulfil a long-held sense of adventure and discover more of the world – and of yourself. The time to move is now – what are you waiting for?

If you’re thinking it might be time for a major move to a new country, take heart from these famous words from Mark Twain:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
