Searching for happiness on distant shores

Searching for happiness on distant shores

The International Day of Happiness takes place on 20th March. The day coincides with a report showing the happiest places in the world, based on a number of measures including GDP per capita, population health and personal freedom

Last year saw Finland top the happiness charts, followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland in the top five. Australia also made the top ten happiest places in the world. While that’s great news for Aussies and those expats making a home down under, there are many other factors that contribute to a person’s happiness.

We’re all happier together

The theme of this year’s celebration is happier together. If you’ve moved to Australia for a fresh start, the chances are the excitement of your new life is tempered by the fact that you might miss your family and friends back home. Social media and technologies such as Skype can help people keep in touch wherever they are in the world, but nothing can really replace the personal touch. In addition to regular visits home, you might still have dependants elsewhere – students at university always need a little extra help, and you might want to offer support to any new grandchildren. A practical way to support is to send money back home regularly, but it’s worth working with a currency specialist so that this doesn’t prove too expensive a way to offer practical support.

Sharing experiences can boost happiness

Another option to increase happiness is to spend time with people who share the same interests and values. If you’re part of a sporting-mad group of friends, you could invest in a shared property on a ski resort and create magical memorise on the slopes. If you have a love of nature, a holiday home for all the family on New Zealand might provide a peaceful haven. New Zealand was also ranked within the top ten happiest places in the world last year, and could prove to be the perfect place to invest in a holiday property that will allow you to welcome friends and family from Australia and further afield.

Chase all your cares away

While the famous song may encourage us all to forget our troubles to get happy, it’s worth taking a practical approach if you’re looking to improve your overall wellbeing. It’s never as simple as moving to the happiest place in the world, and even in prosperous nations, happiness is never guaranteed. What really counts is what happiness looks like for you – whether that’s time with your family, the exhilaration of an outdoor sport like skiing, or the quiet pleasure of enjoying the wildlife in distant countries. One thing that is clear is that our connection with others has a valuable role to play in our own personal happiness. From the opportunity for shared adventures to regular contact with loved ones back home, planning for happiness means being part of a community. Wherever you are in the world, you have a chance to build the personal connections that make you happy.
