The history of our head office building

No. 1 Brompton Road / 2 Sloane Street SW1 London
All properties from the corner of Sloane Street to the present number 159 were first developed between 1761 and 1793 on the site known as Long Close or Long Field.

In 1760, Long Close was inherited by William Browne; it was under his auspices that development of this estate began in 1761.

The one important structure on Long Close before 1760 was the Swan or New Swan Inn, which occupied a group of buildings facing the lane later enlarged into Sloane Street, with a tap house (later the Clock House Inn) facing Brompton Road. The Inn dates back to at least 1699 and was largely rebuilt in 1755-6 when a new lease was granted to Joseph Barnham, Innkeeper.

There was a yard with stables and coach-house stretching to the West, roughly up to the present Hoopers Court, beyond which the rest of Long Close was probably used as garden land in connection with the Inn.

Further development followed and from 1794 a confusion of names, such as Queens Row, Queens Building or Upper Queens Buildings appeared. The situation was rectified in 1864 when the whole road was re-numbered and the assortment of terraces became 1-159 Brompton Road. Reconstruction of 1-9 Brompton Road (with No's. 1, 2 and 2a Sloane Street) took place in 1903-04, under the architect W. Duvall Goodwin. Further alterations, by the architects W. Curtis Green and Partners, were made between 1932-34.

During this period, the original entrance to Knightsbridge Underground Station, built between 1903 and 1905 and situated at 29-31 Brompton Road, was moved to the corner of Brompton Road and Sloane Street and the additional exit at the

corner of Hans Crescent was added. In the early thirties, Barclays Bank took a lease expiring at the end of March 1992 when TTT Moneycorp took over the building continuing the association with World finance.
