    Since September 2010 US non-farm payrolls have gone up every month. Analysts were in agreement that the figures released today would show a 16th straight month of job creation. There was concern last autumn that the pace of jobs growth was not sufficient to keep pace with population growth.

    Employment in Britain is at a more tolerable level than, say, Spain, where a fifth of the workforce is out of a job and two fifths of young people are unemployed. It is roughly in line with the United States, where the most recent figures put unemployment at 8.5%.

    A year ago, the UK figures put consumer price index (CPI) inflation at 3.7% for calendar 2010. As it was bound to do, the increase in the basic rate of value added tax in January 2011, from 17.5% to 20%, sent prices higher.

    The Monetary Policy Committee decided this morning to keep the Bank Rate at 0.5% for a 35th consecutive month and to hold its fire on any extension to the Asset purchase programme which, by next month, will have spent £275bn on buying government and other sterling-denominated bonds.
